How beautiful is nature in the storm! But man must not follow his instincts without restraint like nature does.
The hardship and poverty resulting from population increasing too fast had already been clearly recognized by Plato and Aristotle.
The prevailing opinion on the population question arose in barbaric times. It has been handed down to the present day by that part of the population which had an interest in preserving its rights. This prevented us from hearing the dictates of reason and nature on this question.
Wars are the great plague of humanity.
The ambition of princes would lack instruments of destruction if necessity did not drive the lower classes under their banners. Legislators and statesmen promoted population growth out of consideration for power of attack or defense.
