For centuries, the Tsars of Muscovy – the "little fathers at Moscow" – had learned to leave discreetly alone "a dark people who fought the Turk in the lonely defiles of the west". These were the Cossacks of holy Russia!... a people simple as children... cruel as children... fabulous lovers of laughter and food... fabulous laughters at death!

Cossacks never grow old . They live – and they die.
